China. The Chinese Office for Intellectual Property has published information on the current developments in the field of intellectual property rights

The Chinese Office for Intellectual Property (SIPO) has recently published its newsletter concerning intellectual property rights. The newsletter contains information on measurements in the field of intellectual property rights.

Amongst others, the results of the 100-day-anti-piracy-campaign were presented. The campaign lasted from the mid of July till the end of October 2006 and was launched by the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Public Security and other departments under the central authorities. The participating departments seized more than 58 million illegal publications and some DVD production lines and investigated 10.000 cases of intellectual property theft. This campaign is considered to be an element in China's fight against the infringement of intellectual property.

In addition, figures of Chinese companies with respect to R&D (research & development) were presented, which show that there was an increase by 31% in the year 2005 compared to the year before with respect to R&D funds. The R&D investments of China are said to represent 1.34% of GDP. In addition, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has found out that less than one quarter of enterprises carry out R&D activities and less than 10% own patents.
